Year 4 Topic: Visit from Islamic Relief

To finish off our Active Planet topic, where we have been investigating earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes, we had a visit from Yasmeen Ismail of Islamic Relief.

She described the great work Islamic Relief does in supporting victims of disasters in more than 40 countries across the world. Did you know they will respond to any major disaster within 72 hours as part of their teamwork with the Disasters Emergency Committee?

We considered the effects of devastating events such as earthquakes and floods and what the victims’ needs would be. Our experience of running our own Disaster Relief Centre certainly helped us to imagine what life in a disaster zone would be like.

It was a thought-provoking end to a fascinating topic.

  2. I really enjoyed my coming to visit year 4 to tell us what Islamic Relief does after a disaster strikes. I learnt that after a disaster people need clean waterproof shelter, tinned and dry food, clothing and medical help. I believe that Islamic Relief have done a lot of good work over the last 30 years and I'm proud that my mom helps people in need and I hope in the future I can also do the same.

  3. Islamic Relief centre is where volunteers go to help victims if there is a tsunami ; a tornado or an earthquake ,so they bring food, water and clothing, and blankets which would help them to survive. I think that the people who help others from all around the world are doing fantastic work.

  5. I found out how Islamic Relief helps the most vulnerable people who suffer during times of disasters like earthquakes, tusamis and flooding. They provide food, warm clothing including blankets and loads of support. I think anyone who brings a smile on such people are REAL heroes.
